Foundations of Professional Practice (PCA & PCT) Learning Objectives

Goal

The Patient Care Assistant/Technician (newly hired or >/= six-month absence) will be introduced to UCSF’s policies, procedures, and practices to have the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide safe patient care.

Expected Outcomes

At the completion of the Foundations of Professional Practice, the PCA/PCT will be familiar with the competencies to provide safe and quality patient care.

3.5 hours, excluding breaks and lunch (additional 2 hours for Electronic Health Record Training)

Hospital Acquired Pressure Injuries (HAPI)
  • List groups at risk for HAPI
  • Describe PCA/PCT observations that may indicate potential HAPI
Stool/Clostridium Diffiicile (C.Diff)
  • Compare PCA/PCT and RN role in stool documentation
  • Describe care to prevent spread of C.Diff
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)/Hazardous Waste Handling and Disposal
  • State proper use of PPE
  • Describe safe handling precautions with bodily fluids and hazardous medications
Restraints & Safety Attendant Role
  • Recognize safety attendant role to ensure safety for patient and staff
  • State when to escalate to nurse
  • Distinguish the differences between medical and behavioral restraints
  • Identify needs of patients when using restraints
  • Support patient in non-restraint activities
Medication Access Review
