Frequently Asked Questions
What is the RQI Cart?
The RQI (Resuscitation Quality Improvement) Cart is used for completing CPR skills sessions and maintaining certification.
Do we currently offer BLS/ACLS/PALS through Safety Training Seminars (STS)?
No. CPR recertification is provided through the RQI program housed on Nursing Connect.
Can I use another vendor like STS to complete my BLS/ACLS/PALS requirements?
UCSF will acknowledge any AHA-approved vendor for the completion of BLS/ACLS/PALS. However, the RQI program offered through Nursing Connect is the only program for BLS/ACLS/PALS funded through the Department of Nursing.
I started the E-Learning portion of BLS/ACLS/PALS through another vendor. Can I complete the hands-on portion at one of the UCSF return demonstration locations?
No. RQI is an external program for the provision of BLS/ACLS/PALS utilized by many vendors, including the program housed on Nursing Connect. However, the completion is not interchangeable between vendors. Additionally, please note the RQI program offered through Nursing Connect is the only program for BLS/ACLS/PALS funded through the Department of Nursing.
What if I don’t have Nursing Connect access?
The Nursing Connect learning management system is available to the Department of Nursing and to some additional approved roles.
If you believe that you should have access to this system, first contact your leadership team to identify your department’s process for approving attendance in a BLS program.
Only after verifying with your leadership team that Nursing Connect is the approved process for completing BLS for your role, then submit a Nursing Connect Access ticket.
What should I do if I’m unable to perform CPR skills due to an injury or physical limitations?
CPR is required for certain roles, and there is no alternative certification or exemption available.
If you are unable to perform the physical components of CPR due to physical limitations, contact Occupational Health and your leadership to discuss next steps and possible modified duties.
What should I do if the manikin isn’t responding as expected?
If breaths won’t go in and you don’t see chest rise, perform a head tilt/chin lift to open the manikin’s airway. You may need to adjust it several times.
If you are performing chest compressions and they are not appearing on the screen, check to ensure that you are using the correct manikin for that part of the test.
If you have trouble reaching the correct depth for compressions, try using the attached stool for more leverage.
If you still need assistance, Submit a CPR Issues ticket .
Where can I find policies on license, required training, and hours?
Refer to PowerDMS for the License and Required Training Policy.
What if my certification expires when I’m on approved leave?
If the certification expires when on an approved leave, you have six weeks from return to work to complete the requirement. This is outlined in the License and Required Training Policy.
How can I retrieve my CPR certificate?
You can request a copy of your certificate(s) at any time by emailing RQI support at [email protected] or calling 1-844-1115
To retrieve your e-certificate from one of the RQI skills carts:
- Go to an RQI skills cart and log in
- Select your completed course
- Click “Launch” (do not restart the course) Select “Email Certificate” and enter your email address
You may also complete the course evaluation and request CE credit (for ACLS/PALS) at that time.
For additional support, contact RQI:

Are Contact Hours (CE) available and how do I retrieve them?
Yes, contact hours are available after you complete both the online and hands-on skills demonstration. You must complete the course evaluation within RQI, not Nursing Connect. To access the course evaluation, first log in via Nursing Connect, launch the BLS, PALS, or ACLS course you have completed and then click on the option to complete the course evaluation.
