Executive Leadership in Academic Health Centers

The Executive Leadership in Academic Health Centers program is a six-month initiative for new and aspiring deans of schools of nursing within academic health centers. Those considering other senior faculty leadership roles within a school or college of nursing situated within an AHC are also encouraged to apply. The program features three immersive experiences, a comprehensive personalized leadership assessment, executive coaching sessions, and project-based learning. Throughout the program, participants will develop the knowledge, skills and awareness to lead AHC-affiliated nursing schools in the future. Current and former deans, all national leaders in academic nursing, will serve as faculty for this program and contribute to the development of the participants.

Leadership in academic nursing and AHC environments differs from leading in a school of nursing without such affiliation. Success requires formulating mission-congruent strategies for the school while aligning and partnering with the aligned health system. Successful leadership requires understanding the distinctive characteristics of the AHC.

  1. With this, Immersion One will focus on the characteristics of the AHC and the dean’s responsibility for leading change and developing strategic partnerships. A debrief of leadership assessment and executive coaching will also be introduced.
  2. Immersion Two will focus on the tools necessary to successfully lead complex organizations, including building and leading teams as well as donor, alumni and stakeholder relations. A strong focus on financial management, fiscal responsibility, “funds flow” internal to the AHC and diversification of funding sources will be introduced.
  3. Immersion Three takes an individualized approach to participants’ needs, preparing aspiring deans for their next leadership role while new deans will practice developing convincing business cases for resources and strategic change.

Program Timeline

  • Virtual Program Orientation: Nov. 13, 2024, 10-11 a.m. (PT)
  • Immersion 1 (San Diego, CA): Jan. 14-16, 2025
  • Immersion 2 (Washington, D.C.): Mar. 26-28, 2025
  • Immersion 3 (Chicago, IL): June 10-12, 2025

Executive coaching sessions will be scheduled between immersions 1 and 2, and immersions 2 and 3. Travel and accommodations for immersive experiences are not included in the registration fee. Registration Fee is $8,500 per participant.
