Executive Leadership in Academic Health Centers

The work and role of the dean of a school of nursing within an academic health center (AHC) differs from the dean’s role in an independent university. Addressing the mission of the school while aligning and partnering with the AHC system level missions and expectation, and the ability to work across the entities to advance shared goals is essential.

The Executive Leadership in Academic Health Centers program is a six-month initiative for aspiring or new deans of schools of nursing within academic health centers. This program features three immersive sessions, combined with individualized leadership assessments, executive coaching and project-based learning. Participants will develop the knowledge, skills and awareness to effectively lead AHC- affiliated nursing schools. Current and former deans, all national leaders in academic nursing, will serve as instructors for this program, and contribute to the development of the participants.

  1. Immersion One will focus on the dean’s responsibility for effecting change and the importance of understanding the organization as influential context. Leadership assessments and executive coaching will be introduced.
  2. Immersion Two will focus on the tools of the trade in leading complex organizations including academic strategy and strategic planning; building and leading teams; donor, alumni and stakeholder relations; and innovation. A strong focus on financial management, fiscal responsibility, funds flow and diversification of funding sources will also be introduced.
  3. Immersion Three will focus on preparing participants for the transition to a deanship or continued success in this role. Participants will explore topics such as how you know if you are ready for a decanal role, how to determine institutional “fit,” strategies for successful searches, in addition to receiving consultations on CVs and approaching searches. Deans will practice developing convincing cases for resources or change.
