The UCSF Leadership Institute partners with and develops customized, culturally appropriate programs and initiatives to deliver high-impact initiatives, driving change in global hospital settings. Jyu-Lin Chen and Adam Cooper, co-directors of global programs for the Leadership Institute, currently lead three global partnerships with planned expansion in 2025. Additionally, the Leadership Institute collaborates with Rebecca Silvers, Director of UCSF’s Center for Global Nursing, on initiatives that strengthen nursing leadership and capacity worldwide.

Minkun Yang Memorial Global Leadership Initiative

This initiative was established within the UCSF Leadership Institute, in partnership with Min-Sheng General Hospital, to address the growing demand for a more skilled nursing workforce, trained in evidence-based practice and leadership within Taiwan. Following a year-long feasibility study, the UCSF Leadership Institute facilitated two programs during a week-long immersion in Taiwan, including a 24-hour Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Champion Training for 12 experienced nurses & NPs and a 24-hour Leadership Training Program for six nursing leaders.  As a precursor to the immersion, UCSF presented an Introduction to EBP webinar to healthcare leaders and clinicians across Min-Sheng General Hospital.

UCSF also held monthly virtual coaching sessions for the EBP training participants focused on project implementation and for participants in the Academy for Healthcare Leadership focused on leadership effectiveness.

In 2023, UCSF hosted a week-long customized leadership immersion in San Francisco, California for Min-Sheng General Hospital nursing leaders.

Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital Medical Group Partnership

The Center for Nursing Excellence and Innovation at UCSF Health formed a partnership with the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital Medical Group (HKSH) in 2015. The UCSF-HKSH Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Fellowship program includes education and training relating to EBP, coaching, and guidance to assist clinician participants in conducting a rapid cycle, small tests of change in their home unit at HKSH. This process also includes connecting participants with clinical experts at UCSF through an on-site workshop at HKSH, monthly virtual sessions, and an on-site clinical observation experience at UCSF. Since 2015, 62 HKSH clinicians (e.g., nurses, dieticians, and pharmacists) have participated in this innovative and impactful program. Starting in 2025, this program has evolved into a 3-year Train-the-Trainer program in which our faculty are training six HKSH faculty in how to facilitate this program.

Nursing Executive Leadership and Evidence-Based Practice Fellowship Program in Taiwan and China

The UCSF Leadership Institute received a philanthropic gift from the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation to develop a Nursing Executive Leadership and Evidence-Based Practice Fellowship Program in Taiwan and China. This funding will support the development of an international evidence-based practice champion training fellowship as well as a nurse executive fellowship program. The UCSF Leadership Institute is in the early stages of planning and assessment for this new program, with leadership and evidence-based practice programming planned for 2024.

Center for Global Nursing

The Center for Global Nursing (CGN) represents a collaboration of the UCSF School of Nursing and the UCSF Health Department of Nursing with the Institute for Global Health Sciences. As the central hub for global nursing and advanced practice initiatives, CGN brings together UCSF’s nurses, advanced practice providers (APPs), faculty, and students with global partners to advance global health through education, research, and advocacy.
