Foundations for Excellence in Physician Leadership Program 

The Foundations for Excellence in Physician Leadership program is a nine-month initiative for physicians early in their leadership journey. 

This program will leverage participants’ current role to provide them with the foundational skills, knowledge and awareness not only to effectively lead a clinical team, but also to navigate the administration of health care.


This program includes pre-work, nine three-hour monthly leadership learning sessions, executive coaching, project-based learning and planned networking luncheons. Expert facilitators, industry leaders and executive coaches will aid in fostering the participants’ leadership development, reflective practice and career mapping.


Outcomes for the Foundations for Excellence in Physician Leadership program include:

  • Participants will develop an awareness of their individual strengths as leaders while producing a personal and career leadership development plan.
  • Participants will acquire the knowledge necessary for enhancing performance improvement efforts, fostering a culture of creativity and innovation, and increasing their own as well as their team’s cultural awareness and humility.
  • Participants will develop the skills necessary for successfully navigating the administration of health care including financial management, change management and project management.

Continuing Education Credits:   

Accreditation: In support of improving patient care, UCSF is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. 
 
Designation Statement: UCSF has approved this program for CME credit: UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of 23.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

  • Full cost of the program:  $9,000/participant
  • Participants from FQHC/safety net organizations:  $8,100/participant
  • UCSF employees: $6,500

* Safety net organizations deliver a significant amount of health care and other health-related services to uninsured, Medicaid, and other vulnerable populations. They also include providers who, by mandate or mission, offer access to care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay and whose patient population includes a substantial share of uninsured, Medicaid, and other vulnerable patients. Examples of safety net organizations include:  Federally Qualified Health Centers, member organizations of the California Association of Public Hospitals, city and county health agencies, and publicly operated health plans. Your organization must meet one of the following criteria to be classified as serving the safety net and for you to be eligible for the discounted safety netparticipant fee for this program.

  • > 70% of the patients served <200% federal poverty level
  • > 60% of the patients have Medi-Cal or are uninsured
