Trey Godfrey has been an RN with UCSF for over 5 years on 8L, the Acute Care Neurosciences Unit. He noticed an increase in workplace violence and traumatic events during the pandemic and the negative impact it had on front-line staff that were experiencing higher rates of stress, burnout, and trauma. Trey wanted to be proactive in acknowledging healthcare providers and providing healing during such difficult times. Inspired by his participation in the Healers at the Gate Program, Crisis Prevention Intervention, and Burnout Education, Trey collaborated with the Caring for the Caregiver Program to create the Care and Connection for the Caregiver Class to facilitate coping, resilience, and healing through connection with one another. Additionally, his focus on proactive wellness interventions for staff led him to apply for an EBP Fellowship to implement animal assisted therapy for staff on his unit. Trey has also served as the 8L Unit Council Co-Chair, Skin Champion, and was promoted to CNIII in early 2023.
Emily, AGACNP-BC, is an east coast transplant originally from Philadelphia, PA, who currently practices as a Critical Care Nurse Practitioner at UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco, CA. She received her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania while working full-time as a medical-surgical nurse at the Hospital of UPenn. In the following year, she pursued her passion for critical care and completed the Surgical and Critical Care Nurse Practitioner Fellowship at UCSF Medical Center in 2020. When COVID-19 hit San Francisco, Emily and her co-fellow collaborated with leaders at UCSF to initiate and implement one of the first drive-through COVID-19 testing sites for employees and patients in the San Francisco bay area. To learn more, take a moment to read her and her colleague's publication in the Journal for Nurse Practitioners, titled Implementation of a Nurse Practitioner Led Drive-Through COVID-19 Testing Site (October, 2020). Currently, she is an integral team member of the UCSF Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider department providing evidence-based, expert care and proficiency in standardized procedures throughout the institution’s various ICUs. She takes accountability in her professional growth and development mentoring new-to-practice APNs and APP fellows, co-leading Journal Club for the critical care APP department and implementing patient-centered change as a current fellow in UCSF’s Evidence-Based Fellowship program. Emily’s EBP project focuses on music medicine for the adult intubated patient population in the ICU.
Helen has been a PICU nurse since 2016. She began working at UCSF in the PICU in 2020. During the pandemic, she noted that the staff turnover rate seemed high and that there seemed to be a new demand for part-time positions. The prevalence of burnout was notable. She wondered if the stressors of the job were impacting nurses more negatively in light of the stressors of the pandemic. She wondered if resiliency was the key to longevity for bedside nurses in the PICU. Helen applied to the UCSF EBP fellowship program to find out more about resiliency and how it impacts nurses, and to learn about the evidence-based interventions that support nursing resilience.

I am a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Targeted Research and Academic Training Program for Nurses in Genomics (T32NR009759) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing and am a research affiliate with the Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center. I am a 2022 graduate of the UCSF School of Nursing PhD program where I was advised by Drs. Christine Miaskowski and Kord Kober. My program of research is focused on an evaluation of the biological, social, and environmental factors that underlie symptom clusters and contribute to health disparities in patients living with cancer. Informed by 10 years of inpatient oncology nursing experience, the goals of my program of research are to identify risk factors (i.e., biological, social, environmental) that contribute to the development of symptom clusters and inter-individual variability in how patients experience symptom clusters and to develop targeted interventions to mitigate these negative outcomes.

Team Up to Get Moving: A Quality Improvement Project to Support Acute Care Nurses Create a Daily Mobility Goal with Older Adults
Emebet Aklilu, MPH, MSBH, is the chief of operations for the Diversity, Inclusion and Outreach Office at the UCSF School of Nursing. She is a well-organized and diligent individual with a successful background in developing culturally competent programming and employee engagement strategies within health care and higher education.
Her research is based in developing trauma-informed, culturally competent programs for niche groups. For example, she developed a trauma informed implementation and program guide founded in restorative justice to address harms and harm reduction amongst African Americans in Oakland. The work was then expanded to explore how reevaluating trauma-informed practices amongst clinicians who serve minority communities could result in improved health outcomes and greater partnership between clinicians, their peers and their patients. Now with the partnership of the Restorative Justice Practice office at UCSF, Aklilu and the team are hopeful that they can expand the research to create programming opportunities for the School of Nursing community and beyond.
As an alumna and faculty member of the University of San Francisco, Aklilu has worked closely with a number of campus groups to explore the use of restorative justice in the reimagining of policing on campus and with the expansion of the escalation model, Just Culture. As the primary contributor to two grant-funded projects, Aklilu developed curriculum for campus safety trainings with public safety officers and looked to expand the Just Culture model to incorporate restorative justice practices in conflict resolution. As an advocate for restorative justice and trauma-informed care, Aklilu is a welcomed addition to the School of Nursing.
